Pergolas in Salt Lake City, Utah
We design and build pergolas and covered deck areas that tame strong Salt Lake City sun and stand up to Utah snow and wind.

About Pergolas
A pergola turns an exposed deck or patio into a place you actually want to sit on a July afternoon. Salt Lake City sits at more than 4,000 feet, and the sun here is strong and high, so an open deck can feel too hot to use from midday on. A pergola adds filtered shade, defines an outdoor room and gives you a framework for lights, fans and privacy screens. SLC Deck Builders is locally owned and operated, and as a pergola builder Salt Lake City homeowners can call directly, our crew designs and builds pergolas sized to your space.
We build pergolas in three main styles. Cedar pergolas offer warm natural wood, resist rot and insects better than many species and can be stained to match your deck, though like any wood in our dry, high-UV climate they need periodic refinishing. Aluminum pergolas are powder-coated, won't rot or warp and need little more than an occasional rinse. Louvered pergolas use adjustable aluminum blades that tilt open for sun or close for shade and light rain, giving you much of the protection of a solid roof with the open feel of a pergola.
Pergolas can be attached to the house or freestanding. An attached pergola extends from the wall or eaves over a deck or patio, while a freestanding one can sit anywhere in the yard. We build them on new decks, add them to existing decks and set them over concrete patios. On a deck, posts need to carry their load down to proper footings rather than resting on decking boards, so we often add blocking or new footings beneath. Utah snow and canyon winds matter too: an open pergola is not a snow roof, and louvered roofs and solid covers need proper engineering.
Before building, we confirm whether a permit is needed for your pergola or patio cover, since attached structures, solid roofs and larger footprints are more likely to require review. If you live in an HOA, we can help you prepare the details they ask for. Pergolas are also easy to customize. Integrated LED lighting, wiring planned for outdoor-rated ceiling fans, retractable shade canopies and slatted privacy screens make a covered deck comfortable from morning coffee to late evening. Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose a cedar, aluminum or louvered pergola?
It depends on the look you want, the shade you need and how much upkeep you're willing to do: cedar brings natural warmth, aluminum is nearly maintenance-free and louvered pergolas offer adjustable shade plus light rain protection. Cedar needs periodic staining in our dry, sunny climate. Aluminum costs more than basic wood but rarely needs attention. Louvered systems cost the most and need engineering for snow. We'll compare all three on your site.
Can a pergola handle Utah snow?
An open pergola handles snow well because most of it falls through the slats, but it is not a snow roof and shouldn't be treated like one. Louvered roofs and solid patio covers can hold heavy snow, so they need posts, beams and connections engineered for winter loads. We size each structure for what it will carry and follow the manufacturer's snow guidance on louvered systems.
Can you add a pergola to my existing deck?
Often, yes, as long as the existing deck frame and footings can carry the extra load, or we add new footings and posts that bypass the decking and bear on solid ground. Pergola posts should never rest on deck boards alone. Our crew inspects the framing, ledger and footings first, then recommends tying into the frame, adding blocking or setting independent posts. Freestanding pergolas are another option for patios.
Do I need a permit for a pergola in Salt Lake City?
It depends on the pergola's size, height and location and whether it's attached to the house or has a solid roof, so we confirm whether a permit is needed before any work begins. Attached structures and covered roofs are more likely to need review. HOAs often have their own rules on height, materials and color, so check those early. We'll help you gather the details your city and HOA ask for.
